Pride Guide 1996 GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE C-9
Going to Pride in New York or San Fran? Check this guide
When Andrew Collins, 26, set out to write Fodor's Gay Guide to the USA, he knew he was charting unknown waters. “There are
Andrew Collins
few reliable gay travel guides available, and many of them run paid listings from the establishments," said Collins.
Giving up his New York City apartment, he became a nomad traveling from city to city, researching the gay communities there and assessing the atmosphere and attitudes of hundreds of establishments. "I'm sure I've visited more gay and lesbians-favored sites than most gay men and lesbians see in a lifetime," he said.
The result of his travels was the first comprehensive guide for gay travelers ever offered by a mainstream publisher. Fodor's editorial director Karen Cure said, "It has always been our mission to offer a guidebook for every type of traveler-how could we not have a guidebook for people who are gay?"
Fodor's Gay Guide to the USA offers a candid and irreverent look at the gay scene in 40 destinations, from major cities such as New York and Atlanta to smaller resorts such as Fire Island and Key West.
Collins interviewed many local people in each destination, which is very unusual for a travel writer. "Their insights, opinions, and
recommendations were invaluable to me," he said. He was also able to get great information about the gay scene in other destinations, commenting that gay communities in this country are extremely well-connected.
Also helpful in writing this comprehensive book, was Collins' two years' experience as an editor at Fodor's. During that time, he edited Fodor's guides to New England, the U.S., the South, Ireland, Europe, Cruises & Ports of Call, Chicago, National Parks of the West, and National Parks of the East. "I worked with more than 100 writers during that time and learned a lot about what works, and what doesn't."

On his last day of work at Fodor's, he submitted a proposal for a gay travel guide. Fodor's quickly bought it and soon he embarked on 20 months of research and writing. Now that his Fodor's Gay Guide to the USA is hitting bookstores just in time for Pride, Collins is back on the road already researching eight regional editions of the guide that will be published in 1997.
Collins will take some time out from his travel writing to do some autograph signing. On Saturday, June 8 at 3 pm, he will stop at An Open Book, 749 N. High St. in Columbus. What could be a better gift for Pride Day than a personalized copy?
